Is Polypropylene Toxic to Humans?

When polypropylene backs are used on these materials it can have the potential to release over 40 chemicals into the environment’s air, including styrene and 4-phenylcuclohexane (4-PC), according to Ecology Center. As we discussed earlier, new carpeting and rugs can contain a number of different chemical compounds include those dangerous compounds known as VOCs that can be released into the air and plague both air quality and human health. Those carpeting and rugs that contain polypropylene material on the carpet fibers or as the backing of the carpet or rug can begin to release these VOCs off of the material and into the air over time, a process that is commonly known as off-gassing.
